Here we go again! Rhino employees (and friends) make their third group trip to the Gulf Coast to work with Hands On and repair the damage of Hurricane Katrina. A group of nine (4 veterans and 5 new volunteers) dedicated individuals will work in New Orleans May 13 - 19th. Please check back often as we update this blog daily with our adventures.

She's a brick...house

Among our many fundraising activities this year is the "buy a brick, build a home" campaign where team members sold paper bricks for a suggested donation of $5 each. We taped off the outline of a house in highly visible areas of our workplace for people to place their bricks and encourage others to do the same. To date we have raised $1715 with our brick houses but we have so much farther to go. We have 19 volunteers set to travel to New Orleans over the Thanksgiving holiday but can only cover 9 airfares so far. The deadline for purchasing the tickets is approaching rapidly. We need all funds in house by November 10th.

Having lived in the US as a legal alien for nearly 6 years, I have consistently been frustrated with the fact that I pay taxes but cannot vote and will not be able to for at least another 4 years. I have never felt more powerless as a citizen than at the last election.

I am not going to New Orleans to make a political statement, but I am going in part because I want to contribute to the country which has welcomed me and offered me so much but yet which has let so many others down.

I want to personally thank all those people who have donated to making this possible by buying bricks, baking cakes, sending checks and such like - friends, family and co-workers. The paper brick houses represent what I (and I believe the rest of the Rhino team and the other volunteers) wish for - a gradual building of a new stronger city filled with hope and belief.
